Need ADVICE
Well, I first called e-machine support and was told that since I did not send the computer to them to put in a new e-machine motherboard (I doubt if this is even an option on my system) that they could not offer me any support. I explained that all I wanted was a way to get to the Windows XP files [I tried to boot

30 minute boot up times, time to get a NEW motherboard.... Why should I have to pay for ease of use when it is free for Windows? Okay, let's get this straight again. When you buy a computer, you pay for a Windows license and the OS gets preinstalled on your system. If you built your system, you'd have to buy a copy

Before you do any of this, check your motherboard manual to make sure your board supports the 3.5x multiplier that the k6-233 uses to run (3.5x66=233). It probably does. A better option (if you have a little more $) is to buy a new motherboard. If you are going PII, get a board with the BX chipset so that you can

If really do need to have to upgrade the mobo can you suggest or recommend one please? Thanks. You have an AMD motherboard so you will need a new motherboard if you want to switch to Intel. Why drool over new chips?
YES. but dont try to install them on a real new machine. Some of the computers made in the last few years dont have drivers for Win98. I'd find a machine from the same era. Every time I have had to insert the Win98 install CD to get the drivers to work with the motherboard, video card (if changed), etc.

Please show me an AM2+ motherboard that supports 4 IDE devices, and has at least 3 PCI slots. I'm guessing if it even exists, it is going to cost well over $100 Now I can get an Asus M3A78 or M3N78 motherboard for about $110 total, with integrated everything. (including HD video out) In a way, it's kind of like

Boot new machine. If this works and it works at least 90% of the time if the machines are roughly comparable, the machine will boot and try to load the drivers for the new motherboard. Use the CD or downloaded drivers for the new motherboard to get the drivers for the new motherboard properly loaded.

new motherboard---new copy of XP?!!
Again, no idea here really either, I do wonder what comes next, looks like you need a new motherboard to get another Celeron class, and if you overclock to 450 Will i have any problems with my "now very stable" Win98 if i go to this CPU. Not paticularly with the cpu, if you get a new motherboard I'd be careful

PX5 and K6-2?
To get a new motherboard in there you would need to buy a new case. So once you buy a new case you could move everything over. OR SO YOU THINK! 50$ and of course I'd recommend you get new Memory like SDRAM and more importantly a new hard drive. If you are also unlucky you got that awful 1.2 gig hard drive.

Perhaps the board is not able to run the new e8400 CPU. But I thought i read elsewhere, that even if you need to update bios for the e8400, you'd be able to get deep enough into the bios to do that. I'm glad it sounds like my CPU is okay. I put in a replacement Motherboard but I only get to the LOGO Screen.

<CLIP> anyway, you really don't have to buy second hand gear. i suggest getting a real good quality new motherboard, hard drive, CPU. everything else, you can buy used or get the cheap-o brand. then later on, you can replace them with the good high quality stuff. if you want. --- rich.

Likely as not it will need a new motherboard if the connector has snapped off the pcb (almost certainly if it's a Dell). TBH it's tempting to bin the piece of shit and get something half decent like a Toshiba. The connector outwardly looks fine, but there's obviously something wrong with it.
